El Kastell
Exhibition
2024
On February 25, 2024, twenty artists from the Empordà and Girona region gathered at Kastell la Bruguera, invited to participate in a collective artistic project aimed at breathing life into the abandoned halls of this historic space, once home to Salvador Dali’s secretary. Each artist contributed a singular artwork, carefully selected by Chiara Duchi, to animate the castle’s once dormant rooms. The objective was not only to exhibit local talent but also to foster a sense of unity in preserving the Kastell as a space for art, exhibitions, and collective practices.
The history of the Kastell is intertwined with artistic contributions, having previously been transformed into a museological space by renowned artist Edgar Massegú. This act of preservation and cultural enrichment played a pivotal role in connecting local artists to the project.
The inauguration in February 2024 marked a turning point for the Kastell. The opening event drew an impressive crowd of over 500 visitors, who were treated to an immersive experience featuring concerts by Jordi Serradell and R4 Jazz Trio, alongside guided tours led by Edgar Massegú. Michelle Watson and Mike Duff, owners of La Bruguera de Pubol, provided insights into the space and its history, while Pau Giralt Font hosted permaculture workshops that highlighted the interconnectedness of art, sustainability, and community. The hospitality, managed by Jordi Gonzalez, alongside the logistical support, ensured a smooth and welcoming event.
Food, provided by Tito and friends, was a celebration of local flavors, and the organizational efforts of Teri and Miquel in managing logistics and funding were instrumental to the event’s success. Special thanks are due to the children— Iria, Amelie, Noa—who played a crucial role in supporting the event, embodying the spirit of community that the project sought to foster.
Ultimately, the exhibition at Kastell la Bruguera stood as a testament to the power of collective action in preserving cultural spaces. The project not only united local artists but also underscored the importance of sustainability, art, and community in revitalizing forgotten spaces for future generations.
