Unceasing Interludes
Installation
2019
Unceasing Interludes was created in Bolzano in 2019. The artist, equipped with a GPS tracker, began the project on Walther Platz during the Christmas markets. She chose one person at random and followed them until they either bumped into or interacted with another person. At that point, the artist began to follow this second individual until they, in turn, encountered a third person, and so forth, until reaching a total of five interactions. Each of these encounters left a digital trace on the GPS tracker. After each series of five encounters, the tracker was turned off, the generated map saved, to restart the process. This sequence was repeated 13 times, resulting in 13 unique maps that captured the paths and interludes between individuals.
The collected data resulted in two forms of visual interpretation: the first set of maps was dissected to show each individual’s movement sequence. These paths were printed on layers of plexiglass, which were stacked to create a multidimensional installation viewable from all angles. The second interpretation involved printing the full, undivided maps on thick paper, presenting an abstract but interconnected web of movement, to emphasize its cohesive structure.
The artist consequently created an A5 book titled Synechdoches of Social Behaviour, archiving and illustrating each recorded path. This artwork was showcased at the Gäste Ospiti Guests exhibition at the University of Bolzano in early 2020.
